So, I'm finding out the hard way that if you start a new Mastodon server, nobody can find you.

This is a shameless request for some boosts so some of the bigger instances see me.

@jordankettner I boosted you as requested, but don't forget that what you're describing can be a feature as well as a bug. Over here on sauropods.win we have a palaeontology/palaeoart community that has soft boundaries but definitely does gently steer conversations in ways that are of interest to this group of people. It's nice.

@mike how many relays have you connected to? I'm a single-person instance, was thinking of doing some.

@carlmalamud @mike I don’t use any relays at sauropods.win. I used them when I ran my single-user instance, but my experience was bad. Lots of very objectionable and border-line illegal stuff on the federated timeline. You have to be very careful which ones you use, but I don’t have any recommendations I’m afraid.

@john @mike Thanks John. That was my guess. What I do is I simply follow very liberally. That seems to work. When I was on mastodon.social, I never really used the local timeline, too much randomness. Thanks for the answer!
