House speaker Mike Johnson blamed shootings on may things... but one jumped out at me: Teaching evolution.
Can someone please ask this man how old the earth is and if dinosaurs are real? Corner him now.
@futurebird I’m sure you don’t want to know the answer. (And you can probably guess.)
@futurebird
You talking about this Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who was both a lawyer and founder of a Creationist museum?

I think his record is established, but it sure would be nice if reporters kept bringing it up.
@futurebird He said something about dinosaurs on Noah's Ark. He is in the cult. He thinks they are real but maybe it was like the Flintstones.
The Stokes monkey trial marked a major turning point in the parental rights/anti-education movement. It kind of makes sense that's where he landed, based on his ideology.
@futurebird young earth crowd clings to the notion of a 4000-6000 year old earth with humans coexisting with dinosaurs.
@futurebird I can recall being six or seven years old and believing both 7 days and big bang with no conflict at all. Eventually though I turned eight. I think about that often, and how some people maybe never turn eight in that way.
@ike_seblon @futurebird I don't think I ever believed that the creation story in Genesis was real history. In fact, the experience of my confirmation class teacher expecting us to take the Torah story literally was one of the reasons I rejected Orthodox Judaism.
@futurebird I’m used to evolution denialists, but how are they connecting that to shootings?
A standard line is that the only thing that keeps people morally upright is the fear of Hellfire from their distinctly un-loving God. And in their rigid and backward theology, a very short interval between a sudden Creation and an imminent End Of All Things is bound up with the existence of God.
Augustine of Hippo, mind you, not known for being the warm and fuzzy side of Christianity, said that was bullshit.
@futurebird
I can only presume he has reason to fear a "Sound of Thunder" scenario in the works.
@futurebird Oh, no, he's pretty open that he believes the Earth is only 6000 years old and dinosaurs were on the ark.
Y'know, I read my Bible, I go to church - but y'know what? I can't find anywhere in the Bible where God told me to be an unscientific idiot.
@futurebird The more I observe it, the more I believe that these nuts are desperately trying to manufacture their own reality.
When they're not creating news and opinion echo chambers for their own delusions, they're trying to outright ban the spread of information that conflicts with their deranged and flat-out non-factual world view.
Just watch them get absolutely enraged the moment they hear an actual fact that deviates from the bizarro world they're trying to maintain.
Intuitively, it feels like the further people get away from reality, the greater the amount of energy and effort must be expended to maintain the lie, and there should be a point somewhere along the line at which it all collapses, but we don't seem to be quite there yet.
@futurebird Considering he a writer for Answers in Genesis, which is a young-earth Creationist group, we can be pretty sure he thinks the earth is about 6000 years old.
@jetton I don’t understand how anyone can live like that and also look at the grand canyon and mountains and… everything. How can anything make any sense???
@futurebird@sauropods.win "to test our faith"
@futurebird @jetton Normal creationists tend to brush away obvious evidence, sometimes making up weird flippant explanations of their own on the spot.
I think there's a @pzmyers video where he says that he talked to a creationist once who explained the grand canyon by saying that God and Satan had a battle there once.
But I think Creationist leaders like the Answers in Genesis writers know that they are lying about the age of the Earth and do it anyway; I can't explain how they act otherwise.
@futurebird Of course dinosaurs were real, I mean, what else could Jesus ride to and from his mansion?
@futurebird Wait this was not a joke??
How is evolution anyway related to shootings??
