I feel awful. Allergy season has hit and my immune system is PISSED, has especially kicked off that eyeball inflammation thing again which I am not amused about. There is much winging in my world today.

People in eastern North America: CHECK EMPTY SNAIL SHELLS FOR BEES! An iNaturalist user in Ohio just found an eastern snail-shell mason bee (Osmia conjuncta), and I am soooo envious. The species has been found in Louisiana, Tennessee, Kansas, Virginia, New York, and Ontario, too, though some of those are awaiting confirmation. #bees #hymenoptera #osmia #snails #shells #inaturalist #insects https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/270932596

I was on a Wikipedia dive, and came across the snail Quantula striata. 
Y'all, their eggs and hatchlings GLOW and some adults flash green. I absolutely love bioluminescence.

I was #Hiking again #Today. I was happy to see that Burgundy #Snail and also was sadly reminded that I found two of these #Snails once which had been run over by those #Mountainbike terrorists.
This summer I'm going to try luring the eastern shell-nesting mason bee (Osmia conjuncta) into my yard. The species occurs in Pennsylvania but is extremely rare, probably because its preferred shell, Anguispira kochi, is presumed to be locally extinct. But Ontario populations of the bee are thriving and seem completely happy to use shells of Cepaea (an invasive from Europe) so I thought I'd give them a try here. Kaya (lilac, right) Glitschkow and Iwan (green-yellow, left) Glitschkow. Iwan sometimes is additionally called "der Schneckliche" (still missing @tomatensson here, who coined this name).

Here’s my #printerSolstice @printerSolstice #linocut for the prompt “texture”. The Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta) is a small North American blue bee which makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! In my linocut I show this adorable little pollinator with a Cepaea shell. Each print is 8” by 8” on delicate Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

Well, I just ordered a bag of snail shells from Etsy to add to my insect hotel. Apparently there are 3 species of mason bee in North America that nest in them, and one, Osmia conjuncta, might reasonably occur in Pennsylvania. Thought I'd give it a shot. Snails of Cuba! In the end, we found 5 species, including the most endangered and arguably also most beautiful, Polymita sulphurosa. Unfortunately, we also encountered illegal sale of the shells on mountain pass.
Why? Project is on the evolution and conservation of these snails, led by Dr Bernardo Reyes in Cuba and working with colleagues from London zoo, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
