The 2022 Korean translation of Locked in Time (by Dr Dean Lomax - Palaeontologist & published by Columbia University Press) commissioned me to colourise my 50 greyscale illustrations. "Froghopper sex" shows a pair of Anthoscytina perpetua engaging in Jurassic sex.
Were you tragically unable to attend our recent Paleo 2025 symposium? Were you there but want to listen to one of the talks again? You're in luck! We've just posted the talk recordings to our YouTube page. There's a dedicated playlist for the Paleo 2025 talks, which can be found at

The other #NewBook at the library this week was The Princeton Field Guide to Predatory #Dinosaurs. So, before I get to King Tyrant, first I shall compare and contrast the last two books from Greg Paul. Reviews coming soon to https://inquisitivebiologist.com

Here's a cheat sheet for Megalograptus, commissioned in 2022 for a project I cannot talk about yet. The scientific consultant was Fiann Smithwick.
Fossil jawbone confirms mysterious human lived in East Asia
By Anna Salleh
An analysis of a jawbone found off the Taiwanese coast reveals it belonged to a Denisovan, a mysterious human species that contributed some genetic material to Indigenous Australians and people living in Asia today.

The 2022 Korean translation of Locked in Time (by Dr Dean Lomax - Palaeontologist & published by Columbia University Press) commissioned me to colourise my 50 greyscale illustrations. "Our Refuge and Tomb" shows multiple species of fish living in and around enormous clams (Platyceramus platinus).

A few zooms into my painting of Haootia (Stauroza), commissioned by McIlroy et al for their 2022 paper. The Haootia fossils from Newfoundland (Late Ediacaran, 550Ma), Canada, have the oldest known evidence for animal muscle tissue. Also in this picture is a reclining Charnia and some Parviscopa.
An exciting free talk by past APS speaker Sally Hurst! This time she'll be discussing the opalised dinosaur fossils of Lightning Ridge. This is a free event!

Her November talk on the Found a Fossil project was fascinating, so I'm sure this one will be as well!
Whispers of his arrival have been heard for weeks, but now, King Tyrant is here! To say that I am excited about receiving a review copy would be putting it mildly. Expect a two-part review towards the end of the month!

Remnants of Ancient Life is now out in paperback. Surveying fascinating research on what ancient biomolecules can tell us about extinct lifeforms, this book puts a completely fresh gloss on the topic of palaeontology.

In 2022 I worked with McIlroy et al on a new reconstruction of Haootia (Stauroza), from the Late Ediacaran (550 Ma). The Haootia fossils from Newfoundland, Canada, have the oldest known evidence for animal muscle tissue.
My take on a recent paper is featured in the New Scientist!

I might blog about this so that it's not so abridged!

Trendy headlines spread and persist regardless of any concerns raised by experts. I'm still seeing healines on the de-extinction of dire wolves from various news sites on my news feed this morning.

Reconstructing Wufengella for Guo et et al (2022). From the Early Cambrian, Wufengella is evolutionarily important because it is close to the ancestry of Brachiozoa, Bryozoa, and Phoronida. It is from the Chiungchussu Formation, China.
