Colin Purrington<p>This summer I'm going to try luring the eastern shell-nesting mason bee (Osmia conjuncta) into my yard. The species occurs in Pennsylvania but is extremely rare, probably because its preferred shell, Anguispira kochi, is presumed to be locally extinct. But Ontario populations of the bee are thriving and seem completely happy to use shells of Cepaea (an invasive from Europe) so I thought I'd give them a try here. Yes, I know this is futile. <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/bees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bees</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/osmia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>osmia</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insects</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/snails" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>snails</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/shells" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>shells</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/cepaea" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cepaea</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/pollinators" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pollinators</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/entomology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>entomology</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/ontario" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ontario</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>canada</span></a></p>
Colin Purrington<p>Are there any flowers that Western honey bees avoid? My sister just got several hives and she is worried about the native bee population having nothing left to eat. I'd love to give her a list of plants to seek out for her property. In Central Oregon, so ideally drought-tolerant, too. Entomological Soc. of America<p>New on Entomology Today: When an invasive insect arrives in a new region, genetic analysis for identification is a crucial step, especially as nuanced variations in populations often contribute to a species' invasive potential. <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/entomology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>entomology</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insects</span></a> <a href="https://entomologytoday.org/2025/04/08/invasion-puzzle-contrasting-success-failure-global-whitefly-thrips/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">entomologytoday.org/2025/04/08</span><span class="invisible">/invasion-puzzle-contrasting-success-failure-global-whitefly-thrips/</span></a></p>

LionelB<p>This is the shieldbug I posted yesterday, in context on a dandelion leaf. The similarity to the dazzle camouflage of battleships is striking. It easily passes as a bird dropping.</p><p>In the 18th century, naturalists (who of course needed independent means, for books, microscope, travel etc. as well as leisure time...) had many disadvantages over us. No instant communication, pattern recognition, cameras. They had to rely on distant mounted collections and sketches.</p><p>One strength they had was a much greater abundance of wildlife. But their greatest advantage was in sustained, patient observation. </p><p>To notice what is going on you have to slow right down and absorb. As with painting or drawing, the sensation of time passing changes. Other concerns are locked out. It is a kind of meditation.</p><p>We can and should learn from their focus and awareness.</p><p><a href="https://expressional.social/tags/entomology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>entomology</span></a> <a href="https://expressional.social/tags/ecology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ecology</span></a></p>
