How Male Octopus Avoid Being Cannibalised by Female
Researchers have discovered that some male blue-lined octopuses have evolved a novel defence mechanism to avoid being cannibalised by the hungry...........

That's impressive! Lucky you
I don't suppose you know where I could get a something similar from? I know someone who would just love something like that.
Ok, this is probably one of the coolest birthday gifts I have ever received
A dumpling squid (Euprymna tasmanica)
Also known as the southern bobtail squid, this #cephalopod inhabits shallow waters off the coast of southern Australia. It’s an ambush predator and uses mucus glands in its skin to coat itself in sand, where it then lies in wait for prey, like shrimp and small fish. Dumplings must learn to hunt fast: Because males of this species die shortly after mating and females die soon after laying eggs, newborn squid need to fend for themselves.

What’s the world’s smallest cephalopod? That would be the southern pygmy Idiosepius. Growing only ~0.9 in (2.5 cm) long, it can be found in the waters of the Southwestern Pacific. It inhabits sea grass, emerging by night to feed on prey including small crustaceans.

Day 13 #ArtAdventCalendar: The vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis), literally the ‘vampire squid from hell’ is a small deep sea cephalopod found throughout temperate and tropical oceans with two long retractile filaments, located between the first two pairs of arms on its dorsal side, unlike either octopuses or squids. 1/2

Mistodon: you just saw this longboat for Leif Erickson a couple of days ago, and today it is being attacked by a #Kraken for Myths and Legends Day, a subset of International #Cephalopod Awareness Week. (Other mythological cephalopods include Japan's Akkorokamui and Hawaii's Kanaloa.) This #ANSIart screen was drawn (and amended) by AdeptApril.
Some of my octopus art to celebrate the cephalopods this World Octopus Day! Most recently I made the dumbo octopus, a charming Grimpoteuthis octopus, one of a genus of pelagic cirrate (finned) octopods known as the dumbo octopuses. The fins reminded scientists of ears on the elephant in Disney’s 1941 film Dumbo. Hence their common name dumbo octopuses.

The second #insertAnInvert2024 prompt for deep-sea month is bathyal: the midnight zone between 1 and 4 km depth. This is the zone where I have done the most research studying the sea floor on continental slopes and margins. Sometimes we use ROVs and get to see cephalopods… but I selected unusual one I have not had the opportunity to see. 1/n
It’s deep sea month for #InsertAnInvert2024 starting with the mesopelagic twilight zone in the upper 200 to 1000 m water depth and going deeper. So I’m sharing this adorable Bobtail squid (actually, not a squid, but a cephalopod of order Sepiolida, closer to cuttlefish) is printed by hand onto black Japanese washi paper with a deckle edge. 1/2

Getting ready for deep sea month for #InverteFest. Needs more vampire squid I think! Hence, a new vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis, literally ‘vampire squid from hell’) block. These guys are much less threatening than they appear - they are only 30 cm long and feed on falling detritus or marine snow, not blood.
