When fetching the twig photo, I noticed something red. I saw something scurry past at the time but on first look thought it had missed the frame.

Most of the creature is hidden in the groove. The obvious things are the huge antenna and the two segments which are grey, against the others in orange and red.

Ants are not my province at all. In the USA this could likely be a twig ant but we don't have those in the UK.

Or maybe we do...

This beautiful lady is Solenopsis invicta. Measuring barely over 2 mm long, she is a member of an incredibly successful species.

Unfortunately, she is far outside her native range, and doing incredible damage to her local ecosystem.

It isn't her fault that she's a fire ant.

The Anthill Mob

Has anyone else noticed a dramatic increase in flying ant numbers over the last few years? Usually around late summer when they take to the air to cause maximum annoyance...

EDIT: Come across them in multiple places in the United Kingdom so it's not just one specific location.

This is worker #ant, possible character in some nonexisting cartoon 🐜
Silent, invisible fixer. Someone having own role and goals. Not a family person , not a leader.

Did it some time ago, today I would create it in more steampunk style or rather go full Da Vinci. It has enough arms for this :blobcatjoy:

I could be this ant... working somewhere in the background. Without focusing dangerous attention on me.

3rd week of Feb in #ottawa. Hasn't been above -8C in weeks. 90cm of snow, plus drifts, and -18C tonight.

But today the sun was strong and a single #ant appeared and wandered around the bathroom. The sun often thaws out ladybugs any time of year, but I can't remember seeing an ant before late March or April.
