Wes AFØAJ<p>Despite my battery dying a little over an hour into it, I did have a fun <a href="https://mastodon.radio/tags/POTA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>POTA</span></a> activation this morning, once again at US-11923.</p><p>Down side: It was windy as heck, and to protect the JPC-12, I put it up where I had the only accessible wind block structure... The portable toilet shelter. 🙄 </p><p>But, it worked nicely. For example, one I found was clearly designed for the strengths and weaknesses of injection molding instead of 3D printing, using ridges for rigidity instead of taking advantage of how easy it is to have enclosed hollow space in a 3D print.</p><p>Therefore, I'm modeling my own, in order to make my own multi-mode linked dipole.</p><p>This design has arms on each sides to wind up the antenna leg wires, and then an integrated coax to the toroid shown in the middle provides a common-mode choke. I designed it so that the same print can support several different sizes, from lightweight, low-power ("QRP") operation up to 100W, with mounting holes lined up for three different common toroid sizes (FT82, FT140, and FT240). I used chamfers instead of fillets because bottom layer fillets don't print well.</p><p>The large elliptical hole at the top is to hoist it up, and is meant to allow the winder to rock to pay off wires from either side, lashed onto the winder in a figure-8 to avoid adding twist to the wires.</p><p>I'll see how well it works once I actually make it. 😀</p>
