Given the on-going lowgrade discord-themed spam, we clearly need moderation on the trending hashtags too.
A spammer should NOT be able to spam their way to the top. Could there be a check to see if posts are from suspended accounts added?
This list is produced by the Mastodon web-interface, yes? Is it the responsibility of our server? (I will ask!)
Thank you to all #mods out there keeping a lid on this. It's annoying.
@futurebird yeah, server mods can approve trending tags before they're allowed to trend, but most don't, it can be a lot of work. I curate .art's tags to only allow art/creativity-related tags and things that are about empowerment of marginalised people and stuff, to try to combat doomscrolling and keep a positive experience.
@futurebird these can be removed by an instance admin
@futurebird There's a moderation interface for trends, but it's extremely clunky and almost always not worth the effort. It is still possible to filter individual hashtags when trends on the instance are set to unmoderated.
@futurebird that already exists. By default, only approved hashtags, posts and links can be displayed in trends.
Mastodon specifically has a button to disallow a trending hashtag. I haven't tried it, but I think you could remove it that way.
