I think one of the reasons ants are so interesting to watch is the expressive way they move their antennae. They move them independently, almost like a person feeling around trying to understand their surroundings. Not all arthropods do this— some just hold them out passively— but not ants! They will tappity tap tap u.

If you were talking to an ant she'd be touching you all over your face and body with those things. And she could probably find out all kinds of things about you you didn't even know yourself...

(though maybe not as much if you aren't an ant too, but I bet ants big enough to talk face to face with people would learn.)

"You have low blood sugar! And congratulations on the pregnancy!"

@futurebird

Adding to the last phrase "and do you intend to eat it" ?

@lienrag

... or is it a gift for mom to eat?

@futurebird hm, are there any ants that give live birth? (I'm guessing no, but with so many ants, maybe ... )

@llewelly
Not that I've heard of. They are pretty big of offloading the brood raising stages to sisters so I don't think it'd happen.

@futurebird Do they taste each other with their antennae?

@futurebird I saw the one smaller guy leap back, and figured that was what was going on. But he (she?) didn't run away, just moved... That is interesting to see.

@Jon_Kramer

They are jumping like that because of the light. They don't like it and it makes them a little tense.

If I keep it dim they don't don't those jerks... but then you can't really film them... main reason I don't film them more.

@futurebird Maybe film them in IR or Ultra Violet??

I am 100% ignorant as to how their eyes work... Or the cost of cameras.

@Jon_Kramer

Ants see UV better than humans.... but IR might work... depends on the species. They can see color... to a degree.

@futurebird IR has a longer wavelength, so resolution would suffer. Too bad it isn't the other way around.

I'm off to read about cameras now...

@futurebird , ya, it sucks. It can be made OK, but it gets very expensive.
