The skull and runp were found in 1921 by Charles Hazelius Sternberg at San Juan Basin, New Mexico.
In 1922 he found a complete skeleton.
In 1923 Henry Fairfield Osborn names the species Pentaceratops sernbergii. "Penta" meaning five, "Keras" meaning horn, and -"ops" meaning face. after the two long epijugal bones, spikes protruding from under the eyes, in additions to three horns of Triceratops.
